What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, behavior, sensory processing, and social interaction. It is called a “spectrum” because it presents differently in each person—ranging from highly verbal and independent to nonverbal and requiring significant support.
ASD can be diagnosed in childhood or adulthood, and many people—especially females and high-masking individuals—are often missed or misdiagnosed early on.

Signs of Autism May Include:
-
Difficulty with social interaction or making/keeping friendships
-
Repetitive behaviors or routines
-
Intense interest in specific topics or objects
-
Sensory sensitivities (e.g., to sound, texture, light)
-
Delayed speech or language development (in children)
-
Challenges with understanding nonverbal cues (e.g., tone of voice, facial expressions)
Who Should Consider an Autism Assessment?
You may consider scheduling an autism evaluation if you or your child:
-
Struggle with communication or social relationships
-
Demonstrate behaviors or interests that are highly repetitive or focused
-
Have sensory processing challenges
-
Were previously misdiagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, or a behavioral disorder
-
Are seeking answers or diagnostic clarity as an adult
What to Expect During the Assessment Process
At Cherokee Center for Change, our autism evaluations are thorough, supportive, and tailored to each age group. Here’s what to expect:
Step 1: Schedule Your Appointment
Call our front office to schedule an assessment. Our staff will explain the process and send you an intake packet.
Step 2: Complete Intake Paperwork
You’ll receive a digital packet which includes:
-
General background information
-
Developmental and behavioral history
-
Symptom reporting forms completed by the individual, guardian, and/or teacher (for children)
We also include screenings for co-occurring conditions such as:
-
PHQ-9 (for depression)
-
GAD-7 (for anxiety)
These tools help us understand the full picture of the individual’s mental health.
Step 3: In-Depth Autism-Specific Assessments
-
Testing involves a multitude of tests specific to your age. Most tests are completed outside of the office, but several require in-office completion depending on your age.
-
One test is a 20-minute, nonverbal, computer-based task. The task measures your attention level and impulse control.
-
Results are compared to an age and sex matched group.

Step 4: Review of Findings & Comprehensive Report
Once all assessments are completed, our team—under the guidance of our on-staff psychologist and psychiatrist—reviews all data and prepares a comprehensive diagnostic report.
This report includes:
-
Diagnostic conclusions
-
Test results and interpretation
-
Strengths and areas of challenge
-
Personalized recommendations
-
Referrals for therapy, school accommodations, or medical follow-up (if needed)
You’ll be able to share this report with schools, medical providers, or employers as desired.
